Arnold Weeks speaks on “Trends in Genealogy DNA: an Overview”

By cmochocki | October 14, 2008

On Monday, October 13, at 6:00 p.m., the members of the Fleming Island Genealogy Group assembled to hear a talk by Mr. Arnold Weeks on Genealogy DNA.

According to Mr. Arnold Weeks, a long time genealogy enthusiast, genealogy takes us beyond the constraints of the paper world.  Everything we read on paper is not true.  Some of our ancestors deliberately lied about their parentage; there were unannounced and hidden adoptions, false paternity events, and family name changes. Genetic Genealogy can confirm or refute a hypothesis, such as our ethnicity or our relationship with another person.

Mr. Weeks explained about the three types of DNA testing, showed us some websites, and talked about the cost.  He explained the difference between genetic testing, medical testing, and the use of DNA at a crime scene.  He maintained that DNA testing has an immense value given the amount of time and expense that most genealogists spend on document based research.

Thanks so much for a very informative and fascinating talk.
